Eberspacher Service 4 - Conclusions.
Eberspacher heaters really do need cleaning out regularly - carbon build-up will cause problems. It can restrict fuel and exhaust flow; reduce the transfer of heat to the warm air duct; cause the unit to over-heat - resulting in false and conflicting input from the sensors to the Electronic Control Unit. From experience I suspect that this combination contributes considerably to ECU failure. A new one costs around £280. Enough said!.
My results indicate that Motor Silk has done a fantastic job. OK, it hadn't quite managed to completely clear the blocked glow pin screen. However, the screen is in an area shielded from the main heat and air-flow - making things more difficult for efficient cleaning. Also, as the surfaces of the screen were clean, I think a longer course of treatment would have completed the job. I put only 40ltrs through the unit. A bottle of Motor Silk used at the correct ratio will treat 450ltrs of fuel. Even if you achieve only 4 courses per bottle it will cost you no more than £5 per course. On the other hand,if you choose to do a manual clean you will certainly need to fit a new burner gasket (£3-£4) and a screen (£7 upwards). Also remember that if you have a D1LCC series it is more difficult to work on.
Motor silk is intended for cleaning engines so is also suitable for installations where the Eberspacher draws fuel from the main tank.
After cleaning, Motor silk lays down a 45 micron coat of Teflon-like protection on every surface. Crud can't get a foothold on it, so the surfaces remain carbon-free for a long time.
At the time of writing, Motor Silk is available only direct from the company

Keep it warm, lads.
